代表南非近三分之二金礦工人，也是南非規模最大的全國礦工工會(National Union of Mineworkers，簡稱NUM)因薪事談不攏，自即日起展開全面性罷工行動。

彭博社報導，事件導火線為NUM要求起薪最高調漲六成，但經過談判後，資方僅願意為14萬名工人調薪，而幅度低到只有6%至6.5%不等。NUM發言人Charmane Russell當日透過電話證實談判破局，罷工行動正式展開，

NUM估計，罷工將使礦商營收每日短少3.49億南非幣或3,400萬美元，若加上薪資與稅金，每日損失達5.97億南非幣。南非7月份通膨高達6.3%，為此，汽車、營建與航空公司勞工已早先一步發動罷工要求調薪。
