根據加拿大華人網報導，林霍特2008年8月被挾持，在等候贖金期間挨餓、受性虐待，生不如死，她想過自殺。32歲的林霍特在新書預版詳述那段人質經歷，描寫她與澳洲攝記布倫南(Nigel Brennan)的15個月慘況。書名《空中樓閣》(A House in the Sky)，合撰人是《紐約時報雜誌》(New York Times Magazine)作者科比特(Sara Corbett)。
林霍特說，她給人折磨3天，像動物一樣捆著，手腳緊緊反綁背後，她幾乎無法呼吸，快要崩潰。綁架者解開她的束縛，卻說那只是放鬆一下。他們揚言天天捆綁她，直到他們取得肉金。
沒有人的時候，林霍特想過一死了之，她准備用生鏽刀片割腕自盡。她拿起刀片，一蘋褐色小鳥飛到她的囚室門口。小鳥在骯髒地板拍翅，看了她一眼，然後飛走。
那是她受禁錮初期看見的第一蘋小鳥，她寫道：「我一向相信兆頭－－現在，我在重要關頭看到一個。我要活下去，我要回家，不管以後發生什麼事情，我要忍受什麼，我要撐下去。」
她受禁錮459天，全憑腦子裡的空中樓閣，維持生命力。在她最痛苦的時刻，她想起天上的家，她在那裡盡情吃喝、擁抱親人朋友。
林霍特的新書也揭露，她和布倫南兩家人不再依賴加拿大和澳洲政府，最後自己設法營救親人。兩家人後來籌得120萬元(以人民幣計價，以下同)贖金，把他們救出。大約60萬元交給綁架者，作為贖金，他們本來索取300萬元。其餘的錢支付別的開銷，包括私家人質談判員每天收費2,000元。兩個家庭平分帳單，布倫南家比較有錢，林霍特的父母要靠捐款，籌集另一半贖金。
林霍特說，加拿大和澳洲兩政府都說願意付款25萬元，堅稱那不是贖金，而是維持官方政策的開銷，但綁架者拒絕。
