馬達加斯加首都安塔那那利佛的依可帕河邊，洗衣女工把洗好的衣服晾在河岸上，這些洗衣女工每天收入大約2000阿里亞里 (不到1美元)。馬達加斯加窮困多年，現在希望藉著豐富的石油、黃金、鈾等礦物吸引外國投資，但過去的政變與不安的政治局勢，讓人望之卻步。
