宮妓，猶宮女，因宮女多能歌舞，故稱。由此可以看出宮妓不屬於皇帝配偶範疇，只要皇帝願意，隨便一個宮女都有可能被他臨倖。有人為此表示不理解，皇帝後宮佳麗眾多，絕對夠他一個人忙活了，哪裡還用得著宮妓。按理講是沒錯，可對大多數男人來說，女人絕對是多多益善，玩不過來關在屋裡發霉也不願讓別人碰。在女人方面，男人表現出來的自私尤為甚。

據鳳凰網報導，西元前221年，秦始皇完成了大一統。躊躇滿志的他開始醉心於酒色，在關中，他的離宮有三百所，關外的更多，有四百所。這些離宮內，『皆有鐘磬、帷帳，婦人倡優』，共計『數巨萬』人。這些妙齡女子，不但每天要為秦始皇歌舞彈唱，還要隨時供他淫樂。

有了前人做榜樣，到了漢武帝做皇帝，自然也不甘示弱。當時他宮中有美女18000人，其中宮妓占了不少。更要命的是，漢武帝這個人寧肯三天不吃飯，也不可一日無女人。真佩服他玩了這麼多女人還能精力充沛地對付大臣和處理國家事務。
