紐約市的住所愈來愈難找和昂貴,而且「兩個人一起住與一個人住開銷一樣大」,因此一般伴侶應該會想盡辦法一起住,許多不相干的人也為了省錢合住。但是,有些長久伴侶或夫妻卻反其道而行分開住。
根據世界日報報導,他們或是住在同棟樓宇的不同樓層,住在同一街段的不同建築,或是住在不同社區,甚至住在紐約市不同的區。「紐約時報」報導說,有些人宣稱分開住可以保持感情新鮮,並減少摩擦,免得為了做家事或付房租之類的日常瑣事而爭吵。
年紀較大,已形成固定習慣的紐約客,更偏好分開住。他們或許只是習慣住在不同的社區,彼此都不肯妥協。他們或許離過幾次婚,對共同承擔房貸和同居生活敬謝不敏。
最近大批統計研究和兩本新書都反映這種社會學家所謂的「分居式共同生活」現象(living apart together,LAT)。
紐約大學社會學家克利南柏格(Eric Klinenberg)說:「這種安排出奇吸引人,或許是因為這避免了家庭生活不斷的擾動。這種情況在紐約特別普遍,因為這裡公共文化非常豐富活潑,而且不論你怎麼過日子,大家都見怪不怪。」
伴侶分開住經常只是因為他們早就習慣獨居。62歲的花旗集團律師麥可‧肯尼,在牙醫診斷結識牙齒清潔師英格莉‧竇爾,兩人從2000年就成為固定伴侶,可是一直分別住在自己原來的公寓。
肯尼表示,他們並非刻意這樣做,不過他們以前都結過婚,孩子都已成年,偶爾會回來住。兩人雖然不住在一起,可是他們的生活配合得很好,大部分晚上都會相聚,也一起度假。
伴侶分開住仍會引起訝異眼光,因此許多分居族不願公開,免得讓人覺得他們不是真心面對這份感情。在好房子很難找的紐約,很多住在房租受管制公寓的人也不願輕易放棄,以免到頭來沒有地方落腳。
