白宮回應：瓦解凱達 今年結束戰爭

前國防部長蓋茲在回憶錄對歐巴馬總統重炮攻擊的內容傳出後，白宮7日罕見地做出回應。國家安全委員會發表聲明說：「我們的阿富汗政策多年來已有廣泛報導，歐巴馬總統承諾要實現瓦解和粉碎凱達組織的使命，是廣為人知的事實。我們在阿富汗的戰略計畫和目標明確，就是在今年內結束戰爭。」

國安會發言人凱特琳‧海登(Caitlin Hayden)在聲明中說：「歐巴馬總統對蓋茲繼續留任國防部長深表讚賞，他對國安團隊中表達的不同觀點表示歡迎，因為只有暢所欲言，總統才能有廣泛的選擇，政策才有執行力。」

歐巴馬2008年當選總統，取代布希之後，蓋茲同意新總統的請求，繼續留任國防部長，成為五角大廈的第一個聽命於不同黨派總統的國防部長。
