這次大選被認為是馬國1957年獨立以來，競爭最激烈的一次選舉，主要是長期執政的「國民陣線」，因為貪污腐敗，還有貧富差距等問題，讓年輕一代選民期待改變。

選前民調顯示，執政跟反對陣營支持率不相上下，也讓執政的國民陣線不敢大意，候選人把握最後關頭，前進市場掃街拜票，甚至還在檳城擺出流水席，讓選民吃到飽，希望藉此獲得選民寶貴選票。
