微軟執行長Steve Ballmer宣布即將於未來一年內退休，分析師認為，在蘋果、谷歌兩強夾擊下，微軟帶進新執行長或許才有機會浴火重生。

華爾街日報報導，Ballmer是微軟最資深的員工之一，自他在1980年加入微軟後，公司市值一路由750萬美元倍增至780億美元，員工數由30人增加至10萬人。Ballmer也在2000年比爾蓋茲退休後順勢接下執行長一職迄今。

雖然Ballmer戰功彪炳，但守成有餘，創新卻不足。他在位期間，蘋果靠著行動裝置從破產邊緣活了過來，最後還超越微軟成為全球市值最大企業，後起之秀谷歌更是在搜尋廣告業務將微軟打得潰不成軍。

據CNET.com報導，微軟搜尋引擎市占率僅17.4%，不及谷歌的66.7%；第二季視窗行動作業系統市占率不到4%，亦不及谷歌Android的79.3%與蘋果iOS的13.2%。

Business Insider報導，就在一個月前左右，Ballmer曾宣布大規模組織重整，似有作奮力一搏的氣勢，因此退位計畫曝光後，令微軟內部員工相當震撼。前微軟管理高層指出，將有重大變革正在醞釀之中，蓋茲與董事會或許會考慮將公司分拆成消費與企業兩大獨立個體，以因應快速變化的市場環境，無論如何，隨著雲端與行動科技的崛起，繼任人選都必須具備更前瞻的眼光。
