總獎金約336.8萬歐元(約1.3億台幣)的馬德里大師賽，世界排名第16的日本23歲網球小子錦織圭，耗時1小時又35分鐘以6比4、1比6和6比2首度打敗世界排名第2、瑞士前世界球王費德勒(R.Federer)晉級8強。

在日本網協支持下，錦織圭赴美國訓練至今，目前已經成為全亞洲世界排名最高的男子職業網將，但2011年於巴塞爾網賽首度面對費德勒時，錦織圭還以1比6、3比6慘敗，沒想到歷經兩年後再度遭遇費德勒，錦織圭全場雖只拿到4個破發點，但三度成功破發，優於費德勒僅有的28%破發率成為關鍵，也讓錦織圭終於一圓打破費德勒的夢想。
