在美國維吉尼亞州漢普頓的美國航太總署(NASA)蘭利研究中心，近日科學家在一個名為『Planeterrella』的玻璃容器中再現了迷人的北極光。

據青年網報導，在這個圓頂的玻璃容器中有一個球體結構，而帶電顆粒在磁場作用下發出了燦爛的光——自然現象北極光的形成也是同樣的過程。實驗設備基於19世紀的 『特洛拉』(Terrella)實驗研製。特洛拉實驗第一次揭示了當太陽發射的帶電粒子與地球大氣層中的原子碰撞時，在地球磁場影響下會發光的現象。

研製這一設備的格羅諾夫(Guillaume Gronoff)博士解釋說：『它重現了距離地表80公里處的大氣層，極光正是發生在那裡。當帶電粒子特別是來自太陽的粒子，猛然撞入大氣層時，就會產生極光。』
