美國勞工部9月12日公布，8月份進口物價指數較前月持平，因燃料價格的上漲被非燃料價格的下跌所抵消；除石油以外的進口物價指數月減0.2%，為連續第6個月下跌。根據彭博社的調查，經濟學家預期8月份進口物價指數將較前月上漲0.5%。與去年同期相比，8月份進口物價指數年減0.4%，主要受到非燃料價格下跌的影響。

美國8月進口燃料價格指數月增0.5%，為連續第2個月上揚，其中石油價格上漲0.8%，天然氣價格則是下跌9%。與去年同期相比，8月進口燃料價格指數年增2.2%，其中石油價格年增1.9%，天然氣價格則上漲13.8%。去年，美國天然氣價格創下十年新低。

美國8月出口物價指數月減0.5%，為連續第6個月下跌。與去年同期相比，8月出口物價指數年減1.1%，創去年7月以來的最大年減幅度，主要受到農產品價格下跌5.7%的影響，此為去年6月以來首度出現年率下跌。8月農產品出口物價指數月減4.3%，創2011年10月以來最大減幅，主要受到黃豆與玉米價格分別下跌15.9%與14.5%的影響。

2012全年，美國進口物價指數下跌1.5%，為2008年（-10.1%）以來首度下跌，2009-2011年進口物價指數每年分別上漲8.6%、5.3%以及8.5%。去年全年出口物價指數上漲1.1%，則是創下2008年（-2.9%）以來的最小年度增幅。
