莫斯科辦世錦賽，自然逃不過反同性戀法議題的延燒，甚至成為在牙買加「閃電」Usain Bolt沒出賽時，佔據較多媒體版面的新聞議題。
由於俄羅斯通過反同性戀法案，不得在公開場合有親密行為，也不允許公開提倡同性戀議題，更不能向未成年者提供同性戀資訊，若外國人觸法，將在拘禁15天後驅逐出境。
此法一出，外界紛紛擔心到俄羅斯參加比賽的同性戀選手受影響，尤其是索契冬運，其他還包括喀山世大運、莫斯科世錦賽，還有2018年的世界盃足球賽。
各國選手也對此法大加撻伐，拿下800公尺短跑項目銀牌的Nick Symmonds，就公開表示，要把這面獎牌獻給他的同性戀朋友。
Symmonds指出，他不認同俄羅斯這項法律，但在俄羅斯期間，他不會公開倡導這個議題，「我並不是害怕俄羅斯政府，而是基於對東道主的尊重。」他說世錦賽是個公平競爭的舞台，不應該牽扯地方政治。
「撐竿跳女王」Yelena Isinbayeva則出面呼籲說，來到俄羅斯比賽，就該尊重俄羅斯的法律，「這是我們的國家，也許有來自不同土地的人，每個人都必須尊重，我們到其他國家時，也是遵守該國的法律。」
Isinbayeva表示，她尊重個人性向，俄羅斯也包容所有人，與所有人的看法，「我們抵制的是宣傳這種關係的行為，並不排斥個人感情性向的選擇。」
目前IOC（國際奧會）與FIFA（國際足總）都已經向俄羅斯政府要求，保證屆時不會有選手、教練以及為比賽而來的遊客受此法律影響，目前仍不清楚，索契冬運與世界盃期間，此法是否強制執行。
