日本IT情報網站IT Strike 18日轉述MacRumors的報導指出，美國蘋果公司(Apple)已和Liquidmetal Technologies的專家向美國專利商標局申請可大量生產液態金屬(Liquidmetal)的專利「非晶態金屬(amorphous metal)大量生產製程」。

報導指出，蘋果在推出iPhone 5之前就傳出可能將採用液態金屬，惟最終並未採用；而蘋果此次申請可大量生產液態金屬的專利，也讓次代iPhone或次代MacBook系列產品採用液態金屬的可能性大增。

蘋果曾在2010年8月購買了Liquidmetal所研發的液態金屬專利權的獨家使用權，惟當時的合約已在2012年2月初到期；而據AppleInsider、PCMag.com等多家外電報導，美國證券管理委員會(SEC)於2012年6月18日公佈，蘋果已和Liquidmetal簽訂合約，將液態金屬專利權的獨家使用期限延長兩年，直至2014年2月5日為止。

液態金屬是以鋯、鈦、鎳與銅等金屬製成的合金，表面如液體般光滑，適用於多種消費性電子產品。蘋果一開始是將這種金屬應用於iPhone 3G的SIM卡取出工具(ejector tool)，但這似乎僅限測試，之後並未繼續應用到其他產品。
