【大紀元2013年06月29日訊】(大紀元記者嚴海編譯報導)斯坦貝克(John Steinbeck)所著經典小說《憤怒的葡萄》(Grapes of Wrath)故事是以薩利納斯山谷(Salinas Valley)為背景。而該山谷也是「智能農場」(smart farm)的創業基地。以其命名的「斯坦貝克創新集群」(Steinbeck Innovation Cluster)是一促進技術研究和農業創業的聯盟，由頂尖技術、農業企業、高等院校和風險資本家組成的。
《金融時報》報導，這山谷是高達80億美元農作物產業的園地，一年當中有9個月生產水果蔬菜，而且是美國生菜、草莓、西蘭花等新鮮蔬菜的主產地。
投資者們表示，新鮮農產品將越來越稀缺，人們也越來越重視。這山谷是新鮮食品系統(fresh food system)中使用旨在提高效率和產量的新技術的試驗場地。
現在，農民們已經可以在500英里外用平板電腦監控水分含量的土壤感測器。各種設備可以從種植期一直跟蹤蔬菜到超市貨架上，以來識別潛在的污染源。他們正在考慮利用無人駕駛飛機播撒農藥，或確定可以準備收割的農田地段。
