Sapphire wafer prices rising due to growing demand, say Taiwan makers

Global demand for sapphire wafers is growing due to use in smartphones in addition to LEDs, and therefore prices of sapphire wafers are rising, according to Taiwan-based sapphire wafer makers.

Apple has taken the initiative to use sapphire wafers to make the protective cover on the iPhone 5 rear camera, and LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have followed suit for their high-end smartphones, the sources indicated. An estimated 1.5 million 2-inch sapphire wafer equivalents are used in iPhone 5 production each month, and additional monthly demand for sapphire wafers from LEDs is about 4.5 million 2-inch units, the sources said. In particular, LED lighting is expected to increase demand for PSS (patterned sapphire substrates), the sources noted.

The European Union's (EU) anti-dumping tariffs are spurring an increase in prices for China-made solar modules, marking the end of a period when available inexpensive photovoltaic (PV) devices enabled fast growth of installations in the region, according to IMS Research.

After declining for 48 months since the first quarter of 2009, with a seasonal uptick in February 2013, average pricing for China's crystal polysilicon modules in Europe rose by 4% in June to EUR0.54 (US$0.72), up from EUR0.52 in May. Pricing is expected to continue climbing in July and then again in September, with the average increasing to EUR0.55 by the end of that month.
