從鐵達尼號一炮而紅的李奧納多‧狄卡皮歐，在奧斯卡最佳導演巴茲魯曼安排下，再度扮演年輕帥哥談戀愛。巧合的是，他在「大亨小傳」飾演的傑伊‧蓋茲比，和鐵達尼號男主角一樣，都是莫名其妙突然致富的窮小子，故事的背景，也都選擇了美國經濟大蕭條發生前，華爾街金錢遊戲盛行的時候。
故事一開始，蓋茲比這號人物，就充滿懸疑性。儘管經常在自家豪宅大辦派對，紐約政商名流都是座上客，卻始終神龍見首不見尾，沒幾個人見過他的廬山真面目。直到有一天，蓋茲比的鄰居尼克，接到了一封神秘的邀請卡。
