長久以來，儘管大陸國內外學者十分重視宋代歷史，但研究重點總是偏重北宋，而對南宋有所忽略。言及南宋政治，多是『漆黑一團，腐敗不堪』。『南宋如果是這樣腐敗不堪的朝代，在強敵面前，它又怎麼能立國長達一個半世紀之久呢？』據新華網報導，在浙江大學歷史系教授何忠禮看來，研究歷史必須實事求是，沒有絕對的好與壞，切忌寫出悼詞式或判決書式的文章。『我這一輩子，就是為了還原一個真實的南宋。』何忠禮說。（以下記者簡稱『記』，何忠禮簡稱『何』）
