微軟惡意軟件保護中心高級專案主管holly stewart在接受媒體採訪時陳述了不少關鍵資訊，包括微軟在過去的版本中從未發布的資訊。這一部分提供了微軟目前支援windows作業系統軟件的惡意程式遭遇幾率(encounter rate)。windows xp的惡意軟件遭遇率比vista/7低，僅比windows 8高出少許。但是感染率卻是win8的近6倍。

根據光明網報導，這裡所謂的感染率是指在遭遇惡意程式後最終感染的概率。每1000台採用windows xp的pc中，平均就有9.1台被檢測出感染了惡意程式。這比windows vista和windows 7的5.5‰和4.9‰高出不少，更是高出1.6‰的windows 8六倍。

stewart說，目前windows xp仍然安裝在全球範圍內21%的pc設備上，也就是說每10台pc中就有兩台在運行windows xp系統。即便是美國，這個數字也達到了13%，這對於一款壽命12年的作業系統來講，仍然顯得有些偏高。
