精武體育會創辦人之一陳公哲曾撰文回憶，霍元甲曾患有咯血病，後來越來越嚴重。有賣『仁丹』藥的日本人到霍元甲住處推銷藥，說是可以醫治咳血病，並可治癒肺病。霍元甲相信了，買來服下後，病情反而嚴重起來。霍元甲得病的原因，與他少年時練氣功不當有關，『吞氣橫闕，遂傷肺部』，因而導致咯血，面色蠟黃，故有『黃面虎』之稱。搬到王家宅居住後，霍元甲病情越來越嚴重，他的好友和徒弟將他送到上海新閘路中國紅十字會醫院醫治，兩星期後病逝。
